In 1963, Rheinisch-Westfälische Elektrowerk (RWE), the precursor to today's RWE Power AG, launched the first two units of the Niederaußem power plant with a generating capacity of 150 megawatts. At the time, these units were considered state-of-the-art. Similar units had been commissioned in Frimmersdorf and Weisweiler in 1955. As electricity demand grew, so did the size of the power plant units: in 1965, RWE commissioned its first 300 MW block, and by 1974, the first 600 MW block was operational at Niederaußem. The plant reached a milestone in 2003 with the completion of Block K, boasting a gross output of 1,000 MW. The architectural evolution of the plant, marked by increasingly taller boiler houses, reflects the technological advancements over time.
