Sule Pagoda is located in the heart of Yangon and is one of the city’s most important religious landmarks. The pagoda is known for its central location, surrounded by busy streets and commercial areas. It is a focal point of the city’s Buddhist community and a key part of Yangon’s skyline. According to local legend, the pagoda is over 2,000 years old, making it one of the oldest pagodas in Myanmar. The pagoda’s golden stupa, which stands 46 meters tall, is surrounded by a series of smaller shrines, making it an essential part of the city's spiritual and cultural landscape.
Wat Mahathat is located in the center of the city. It is the most important temple. It is considered the royal temple of Sukhothai. Inside the temple, there are many ancient sites, including the main stupa, the chapel, the pavilion, the ordination hall (church), and as many as 200 surrounding stupas. The main stupa of the temple is a stupa in the shape of a lotus bud, which is a unique stupa style of Sukhothai art. Surrounding the main stupa are 8 surrounding stupas: the stupas on the four sides are Sukhothai-style castle-shaped stupas, influenced by Khmer art and have stucco patterns influenced by Sri Lankan art. The stupas on the four corners are five-tiered castle-shaped stupas. Influenced by the art of Bagan-Hariphunchai-Lanna, around the main pagoda there are stucco sculptures of disciples in the Anjuli posture walking clockwise around the Phra Mahathat. In the first stone inscription, it is described that “...in the middle of Sukhothai city there is a viharn, a golden Buddha image, an Attharat Buddha image, a large Buddha image, and a small Buddha image...” In addition, in the stone inscription of Wat Pa Mamuang in the year 1904 during the reign of Phra Maha Thammaracha Lithai, there is also a bronze Buddha image and a golden Buddha image enshrined in the middle of Sukhothai city. The golden Buddha image mentioned here is generally understood to mean Luang Pho To of the old city people, which used to be enshrined in the royal chapel of Wat Mahathat. Later, King Rama I of Rattanakosin ordered it to be brought on a raft to be enshrined in the royal chapel of Wat Suthat Thepwararam, Bangkok, which King Rama IV later bestowed the name Phra Sri Sakyamuni. Currently, it is inside the royal chapel of Wat Mahathat. Therefore, the large base of this Buddha image is still visible. As for Phra Attharot, which is mentioned in the first inscription, it refers to a large standing Buddha image, 18 cubits high, enshrined in a pavilion on both sides of the main chedi. Next to the royal chapel to the east is the high chapel. It is so named because this chapel has a high brick base in the form of a lotus pedestal, approximately 1.5 meters high. It is an architectural style from the Ayutthaya period, which was built later. This leaves only a narrow space between the front of the high chapel and the temple wall, disproportionate to the height of the building. In addition, inside Wat Mahathat, there is a group of chedis, separated into one group to the south of the main chedi, centered on the five-spire chedi, which is the second largest after the main chedi. Evidence from the Lan Thong inscription indicates that this five-spire chedi is where the remains of Phra Maha Thammaracha Lithai are enshrined.
