Indonesia has officially begun exporting electricity to Papua New Guinea, in the border areas of Skouw in Papua and Wutung Village in Papua New Guinea. President Jokowi disclosed this during a joint press statement following his meeting with Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape at Bogor Palace on Monday, July 15, 2024.

"Regarding the electricity network development by PLN at the Skouw and Wutung borders, I can announce that this cooperation has commenced today and electricity has been lit in Wutung today," said Jokowi.
In addition, Jokowi also mentioned that the Indonesian government is committed to continuing to contribute to development in the Pacific region. This includes grant programs, such as hospital renovations in Port Moresby and public facilities in West Sepik.

Previously, an agreement had been reached between PT PLN (Persero) and PNG Power to supply electricity to the villages of Wutung and Skouw on August 10, 2023. These areas are located on the border between Indonesia and Papua.
According to PLN's website, the electricity supplied to Skouw reaches 6 megawatts, whereas its requirement is only 1 megawatt.
Overall, the Jayapura System has a capacity of 149.87 MW. Currently, the peak load in Jayapura is recorded at 96.56 MW, with a reserve margin of 55.2 MW or 53.31%.
Meanwhile, Papua New Guinea currently has a cumulative installed electricity capacity of 1.2 gigawatts.
